A PROMISING Port ice skater is ‘cutting it’ as a competitor and coach.

Christina Molloy, 18, only started skating nine years ago but is now a member of one of the biggest clubs in Scotland.

The teenager skates for Magnum Figure Skating Club and trains with them in Stevenston.

Christina said: “I started at the Waterfront Leisure Complex taking classes and private lessons.

“At first I couldn’t even stand up on my skates, and now I’m a level one coach.”

Christina, of Arran Avenue, is taking part in the club’s open competition today and over the weekend with her routine, Mask of Zorro.

It’s the first competition where she has to perform two axel jumps.

She has also set her sights high on gaining her level two coaching certificate which means she will get paid.

She said: “Ice skating is a different type of sport. It’s very competitive and it can be quite strict as your costume has to match your music.

“I enjoy coaching because you can have fun with the wee ones.”

Christina is currently studying for a coaching and development sports course HNC at West Scotland Scotland but has an interview with the University of the West of Scotland for a place on a degree course.

The sporty all-rounder is also a swimming instructor at the Waterfront Leisure Centre and still helps out at the rink.

Christina lives with her mum Lorna and dad Frank Dixon, who are proud of her achievements.

Lorna, 42, who has hired a caravan for the weekend to watch her compete, said: “We’re so proud of her. There’s not many 18-year-olds who are not out partying all the time.

“Christina trains and she works.”

But it is also an expensive sport, costing £600 for skates alone, and Christina is seeking financial backing to allow her to follow her dream.

Lorna said: “We are looking for a sponsor.”

If anyone can help, they should contact Lorna on 07772 485083.
