PROPOSALS for improved access to Port Glasgow Railway Station have been welcomed by a local councillor.

SNP health and social care spokesperson Jim MacLeod supported the council’s plan for a feasibility study into how to improve access for disabled people, after Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) gave £30,000 towards the investigation.

Cllr MacLeod said changes had first been proposed 20 years ago.

He said: “Thank goodness, after all these years, that access for disabled people getting to and from the eastbound platform is being considered.

"This is an issue several wheelchair users have raised with me over the years, and which I raised with the council.

“Disabled people, like anyone else, require access to public transport.

“So I am glad this study will finally get under way, and I hope its findings are quickly acted on afterwards to take the necessary action to allow good disabled access to both sides of the Port railway station.

“It’s to be welcomed.”
