A DJ from Port Glasgow has been ‘taken on’ by legendary 80s chart-toppers a-ha and says it is a dream come true.

David Sowter is in a spin after being asked to support the Norwegian music icons, especially because they are his favourite band of all-time.

Famous for tracks such as ‘Take On Me’ and ‘The Sun Always Shines on TV’, a-ha have sold hundreds of millions of records worldwide and tonight and tomorrow they will be filmed in their native Norway for the latest instalment of the MTV Unplugged series.

Super-fan David was approached out of the blue to DJ at the band’s official after-party and jumped at the chance.

David, who lives in the Port, said: “It’s a dream come true — amazing.

“When I was growing up and listening to their music I never envisaged I would be in a position to do this.

“It’s everybody’s dream to work for their childhood heroes.”

This weekend is not David’s first time working for the band but he says the gigs will be his biggest yet.

He started spinning records in Rico’s 23 years ago thanks to Greenock DJ Andrew ‘McD’ McDermid and for the past 17 years he has been a regular in Word Up.

His association with his music icons stretches back to 2006 when he bumped into their website and social media manager in New York at a fans’ event the night before a concert.

They kept in touch and since then David has been a DJ for a-ha several times — including to over 1,500 fans in Oslo seven years ago — and has got to know the band.

He also supported frontman Morten Harket on a solo tour.

This time round David was personally chosen by a-ha manager Harald Wiik.

David said: “This is the biggest one yet.

“The band have been very coy and hush-hush about it then a few days ago they announced the gigs would be for MTV Unplugged, and that’s very special.”
