A SCHOOLGIRL saved her mum’s life after she collapsed at home.

Mum Laura McBurnie, who has diabetes, suddenly took ill at her house in Moorfield Avenue, Port Glasgow, after suffering from a dangerous hypoglycaemic attack.

Her quick-thinking daughter Evie, who’s just seven years old, saved her mum from falling into a diabetic coma.

She calmly phoned 999 and alerted police officers that her ‘mummy was having a hypo’.

Evie also gave the officers clear instructions about their address and let them in when they arrived.

Laura — who has now made a full recovery — says her daughter is a hero.

Laura, 38, told the Tele: “I have type 1 diabetes and hadn’t been feeling well that day.

“I vomited that morning but I didn’t think anything of it.

“The last thing I remember was at 9pm that night.

“The next thing I knew I was being woken up by paramedics and police at 2am.

“I found out that I’d had a really bad hypo, which can lead to a diabetic coma.

“It was the worst hypo I’ve had in 15 years.

“It doesn’t surprise me that Evie had phoned 999 because she’s so intelligent.

“She was only two pounds 10 ounces when she was born but that hasn’t held her back.

“I’m so proud of her.

“If I had been left, I could’ve fallen into a diabetic coma and worse.”

Police officers Fiona Kane, David Starrett and Chris McKay were on duty in the early hours of June 24 when Evie called the station.

Sergeant McKay said: “She was very brave, very calm and so composed for someone of her age.

“She was able to give the right address — she was brilliant.

“I think it’s amazing that she phoned 999 and asked for help.”

Constable Kane added: “She was so brave — she’s a wee star.

“She was very calm and told us all the right things.

“Evie is very mature.

“When we arrived at the house she also showed us where the Lucozade was.

“She’s a hero.”

To recognise Evie’s lifesaving actions, the police officers presented her with a huge teddy bear, which she has called Robert, and a big bag of sweets.

She was also invited to Greenock Police Station yesterday for a special tour with the officers, including PC Amy Rutherford, and was given a certificate for showing bravery and remaining calm.

Thanks to Evie’s quick-thinking actions, her mum is now feeling fine.

Laura said: “I feel pretty lucky.”
