MURDER inquiries into the deaths of a man and a woman in separate incidents in Port Glasgow were launched by detectives over the weekend.

The probes came after an investigation into the previously unexplained death of mum Karen Young took a sinister turn — and also the alleged killing of a man within a house in the town.

Thirty-eight-year-old Terence McGeown was found critically injured at a property in Broadstone Avenue and was rushed by ambulance to Inverclyde Royal Hospital.

Mr McGeown was discovered at around 6.30am on Saturday morning.

Medics fought to save his life but he succumbed to his injuries and passed away several hours later.

Friends and family took to social media to leave messages of support and pay tribute to the popular father-of-two.

In the other investigation, police have concluded that Kilmacolm woman Karen Young who was found dead in Port Glasgow a month ago, was murdered.

The 47-year-old’s body was found within a property in Kelburn Terrace on June 9, pictured above, and at that time detectives said that they didn’t know what had happened to her.

Following extensive inquiries over recent weeks they have now launched a murder investigation.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “The death was initially treated as unexplained while officers from the major investigation team conducted extensive inquiries to establish the circumstances of the death.

“As a result of these inquiries the death is being treated as a murder inquiry.”

Meanwhile, police — who had been following a definite line of inquiry into the death of Mr McGeown — have arrested a 24-year-old man.

The suspect is expected to appear at Greenock Sheriff Court today.

Anyone with information regarding the death of Karen Young is asked to call the police on 101 on 0800 555 111.
