RAINBOW Family Centre has been putting the love into learning at their lunch clubs this summer.

Up to 40 children and parents have taken the opportunity to spend some quality time together.

It is the second year in a row the Port Glasgow family centre has run the sessions.

Children took part in activities with their parents — including Bookbug and reading from the pop-up library — before enjoying lunch.

It was such a huge hit the idea was rolled out across Inverclyde this year.

Head of centre Ann Marie Boyd said: “The lunch clubs have been very successful and everyone has enjoyed taking part.

“It has all been about encouraging parents and children to work together.

“We had lots of activities and Allison Nolan from the library service has had a pop up library here. She has been helping the children choose books. It is a great way of raising literacy.

“I think in particular they enjoyed the lunches.”

Education Secretary John Swinney recently visited Port Glasgow’s Newark Primary to see for himself the impact the clubs are having.

The lunch club, funded through the government’s Scottish Attainment Challenge, finished up with a celebration of learning.
