WONDERFUL wordsmiths from Port High School got the royal seal of approval when they met and performed for Prince Harry and his fiancee Meghan Markle.

The talented teenagers wowed the royal couple with their award-winning poem ‘Young Life Crisis’ at an exclusive reception held at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.

Pupil Layla Milne, who wrote the poem, says it was an incredible experience.

The 15-year-old said: “It was so unbelievable.

“I thought we would be performing on a big stage and the royal couple would be up on a balcony.

“But it was in this really small room with not a lot of people so we were standing right in front of them.

“Then we had a one-to-one chat with Meghan and Prince Harry.

“They were so approachable and chatty.

“They were really interested in what we had to say.”

Pauline Barclay, the school’s acting depute head, says the pupils were confident and gave an amazing performance.

She added: “The audience laughed at all the funny parts and they got a big round of applause at the end.

“Afterwards the royal couple spent about five minutes with our pupils.

“Meghan said she really liked their choreography, which made them really proud because she is an actress.

“Prince Harry also asked them what they feel are the issues facing young people and asked them if they felt the older generation is listening to them.

“The pupils said that they feel that older people think that young people only care about the number of ‘likes’ they receive on social media but they said that young people have got something to say and they want their voices to be heard.”

Mrs Barclay says Prince Harry left them with a very positive piece of advice.

She added: “Prince Harry said that it’s great to celebrate their success but he said that these things should be the beginning and not an end.

“He encouraged them to carry on and look at ways to take this forward.”

The talented pupils — Layla plus Kerr McLean, Morgan Burns, Emma Young, Ellis Higgins, Jodie Pollock and Abby Brown — were invited to the reception in their capacity as reigning Scottish Youth Poetry Slam champions.

They also impressed First Minister Nicola Sturgeon with their performance.

Mrs Barclay said: “Nicola Sturgeon told the young people that she loved their performance.

“She asked them if they could send her a written version of the poem so she could read it again.”

The youngsters also mingled with other dignitaries and high profile guests.

Mrs Barclay added: “It’s an experience for them to remember.

“I’m so proud of them. They rose to the occasion.”
