A PORT Glasgow man was rushed to hospital after being viciously attacked in the street by a gang of men.

The 40-year-old was walking along Auchenbothie Road on Monday afternoon with a woman when the group jumped out of a car at around 2.30pm.

There was an argument and the victim was then struck over the head with a weapon.

Detectives are today appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Detective Constable Stuart Young said: “It was the middle of the afternoon so there will have been people on the school run.

“We know that three or four men were involved.

“There was an altercation and the victim was struck over the head.”

The attackers then got back into the dark-coloured car and sped from the scene, near to St Francis Church.

The injured man made it home and called an ambulance.

He was rushed to Inverclyde Royal where he was treated for serious head injuries, with staples inserted into his wound.

Detectives are looking for information about the direction the car went off in and for descriptions of the suspects.

People can contact Greenock CID on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
