A MASKED raider who tried to hold up a Spar shop with a can of lager hidden in a bag has been jailed.

Greenock Sheriff Court heard John Glancy, 47, covered his face with a hood and scarf before going into the store, above, in Port Glasgow"s Princes Street.

But hapless Glancy"s robbery attempt was thwarted when a terrified shop assistant recognised him as a regular customer.

The dad-of-two was locked up for 20 months this week after pleading guilty when he appeared before Sheriff John Herald.

Defence agent Eddie Sweeney, appearing on behalf of Glancy"s principal solicitor Gerry Keenan, described the robbery attempt as "hopeless". He added: 'Within his pocket was a tin of lager in a black plastic bag and this was brandished, although he accepts the woman may have thought this was a gun.

'The incident lasted around 20

seconds and then the girl, to who he was well-known, told him to take down the hood and scarf and not to be so stupid.

'She said he didn"t need to do this. All in all, it was a hopeless attempt by a man whose actions were not premeditated and can be attributed to his consumption of alcohol to the extent that he has little recollection of the incident.' During his appearance in the dock on Tuesday, Glancy pleaded guilty to concealing his face with a hood and scarf before going into the store in Princes Street and pretending to have a gun in a bag.

It is then alleged Glancy demanded money from a female shop assistant after presenting the item concealed in the bag at her on 25 February this year.

Mr Sweeney said Glancy had battled a long-standing alcohol problem and was fearful of a spell behind

bars due to his mother"s state of ill health.

After hearing the circumstances of the case, Sheriff Herald jailed Glancy, whose address was not given in court, for 20 months.
