DAMAGE: Tyre tracks.

A GROUP of travellers who set up camp in Inverclyde have left - leaving grass churned up at one of the area's beauty spots.

The visitors had parked in caravans on ground near Newark Castle earlier this week.

Councillor Jim MacLeod, right, had received complaints from residents about their presence at the castle - which is a popular spot for tourists and wedding photographers.

The councillor was involved last year when another group of travellers set up camp at a nearby spot last year.

The group was eventually moved on by Inverclyde Council, but left rubbish behind. This time, huge tyre marks have been made across the grass.

Councillor MacLeod said: "I'm glad to see they have moved on.

"It's not the ideal place to be, with the castle nearby and cruise passengers coming to Inverclyde.

"People should not be driving on the grass, especially in heavy vehicles. This just means more work for council staff and this is paid for by the council taxpayer."

Mr MacLeod does not think he has seen the last of the issue.

He said: "When one group of travellers goes, another group comes in.

"I hope we don't see a repetition of previous years. The council will continue to monitor the situation."
