A DEAF and mute man was followed off a bus and badly beaten by a teenager after refusing to give him a cigarette.
Robert Wilson, 17, rained punches and kicks on the vulnerable 45-year-old’s head during the ferocious attack in Port Glasgow’s Arran Avenue just after 9.30pm.
Greenock Sheriff Court heard the victim was kept in hospital overnight due to the severity of the assault.
Wilson could now be facing a spell behind bars after pleading guilty to the offence on Thursday.
The court heard how the victim was travelling on the bus with a friend when the accused approached and asked for a cigarette.
Depute fiscal Clifford Most said: “An argument started over this which became heated.
“Both parties exited the bus and the complainer was approached again by Wilson and another male. At this point the man was assaulted, causing him to fall to the ground.
“While lying there the accused began kicking and punching him on the head and body.”
The 45-year-old victim was taken to hospital for examination, where he was found to have suffered a number of cuts to his head.
Mr Most added: “He was detained overnight before being released.”
Wilson, of Skye Road, Port Glasgow, pleaded guilty to acting with another person and assaulting the man, knocking him to the ground and punching and kicking him on the head and body. The assault took place on 22 April.
Defence solicitor Alasdair Hendry pleaded guilty on the teenager’s behalf when he appeared before Sheriff Vincent Canavan.
Wilson will appear again in September after sentence was deferred for background reports.
