MANY MANY HAPPY RETURNS: Birthday girl Ada Barclay, centre, celebrates with her family.

A REMARKABLE Port Glasgow lady is celebrating being Inverclyde's oldest resident for the second year running.

Ada Barclay's lust for life shows no signs of slowing down even though she has reached a magical 106.

The great-great-grandmother marked her special day with a fabulous party with family and friends on Wednesday.

Ada now lives in Cochrane Care Home in Johnstone, but only moved from her home town when she was 90 to move to Inchinnan to be near her daughter May. She lived in her own home there until she was 99.

May, 84, of Erskine Hospital, Bishopton, said: "It was a lovely party, we had a beautiful cake and all her family and friends enjoyed it. She had a lovely day - she was delighted."

Ada was married to James, a blacksmith at Lithgows' and they lived in Glasgow Road and Broadfield areas of the town.

They went on to have seven children, May, Elsie, Jim, George, Robert, John and another daughter Isabel who sadly died at the age of 28.

Ada also outlived James, who passed away 17 years ago and her youngest child John who died last November at the age of 66.

Her daughter stressed that her mum also has a good quality of life and praised staff at the care home for their attentiveness.

She said: "I haven't got a clue why she has lived so long but she is well looked after and the staff are marvellous.

"Although mum has to use a wheelchair, she does her exercises, goes to bingo and sometimes goes out for tea in the afternoon and she gets her hair done every week."

Ada has also remained a faithful Tele reader.

May said: "That was the first thing she did every night, read her Telegraph. The Telegraph is still our local paper."
