WORK on a new bus station and park and ride facility in Port Glasgow is set to begin 'as soon as possible'.

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport last week gave the green light for funding totalling

£1.42 million to revamp transport facilities in the town.

The authority approved £650,000 to upgrade the bus station and £740,000 for the park and ride, which will be developed at the site of the old Highholm Primary School.

Councillor David Wilson, right, Inverclyde's member on the SPT board, now expects work to begin shortly.

Councillor Wilson said: "We can go ahead with work as soon as possible and this will be a real boost to the local community."

The park and ride will accommodate 150 vehicles.

Cash to improve the bus terminus will fund road surfacing, new bus shelter areas, improved lighting and an upgrade of the CCTV system.
