A BACKLASH has been sparked over the suggestion that the Port Glasgow park and ride should be moved to a different location.

Inverclyde Council leader Stephen McCabe has hit out at local Liberal Democrats who last week called for a rethink about the proposed site of the facility, at the former Highholm Primary school.

They fear the project will encourage residents away from the town and suggested the prime site would be better suited for affordable housing.

But Councillor McCabe says the former Highholm Primary site is the perfect location.

He also believes in the current housing market 'slump' it would struggle to attract a developer.

Mr McCabe told the Tele: "It's very interesting that the Lib Dems are raising the park and ride as an issue now because the proposal has been through several council committees and they didn't dismiss it.

"It was unanimously backed so that's why we took it forward and secured funding from Strathclyde Partnership for Transport.

"One key thing from this is that their councillors never opposed it.

"Highholm is immediately adjacent to Port Glasgow town centre and at the interception of the Inverclyde rail lines - anyone getting on there can get the Gourock or Wemyss Bay services.

"The Lib Dems suggested Bogston instead but that is on the Gourock line only and not every train stops there, and while Woodhall is accessible it again has a limited service.

"So the best place for a park and ride in Inverclyde is Port Glasgow."
