A TEENAGER is fighting for his life in hospital after a horror road crash in Port Glasgow.

The Saturday morning smash saw a car containing five people hit by a lorry on the A8 near Coronation Park.

Fire crews were forced to cut the roof off the vehicle, pictured, so the 19-year-old could be treated and freed.

He was then rushed to the Golden Jubilee Hospital in Clydebank for treatment. Police have described his condition as ‘critical but stable.’ The Tele understands he is from Greenock.

One eyewitness who saw the aftermath at the scene said: “A lot of folk gathered at the side of the car, one lady was hysterical and was screaming.

“A lot of people were very upset.

“It looked like some of the passengers managed to escape from the vehicle and they looked in shock.” A helicopter was scrambled to the scene of the crash but was not required to be used.

A blood transfusion vehicle also raced to Port Glasgow. The other four people injured were treated at Inverclyde Royal but later released after escaping with cuts and bruises.

The lorry driver was not injured.

The road was closed in both directions for more than six hours, causing traffic chaos in Port Glasgow town centre and beyond.

At one stage traffic towards Greenock was backed up all the way to the roundabout at Parklea. A large queue also built up towards Bogston in the other direction.

Police reopened the main road at 3.45pm after their collision investigation unit had finished combing the scene.
