OLYMPIC diving star Tom Daley was left in awe of a rising Port Glasgow athlete after he triumphed in the Mini London Wheelchair Marathon.

Fourteen-year-old Kyle Brotherton completed the challenging three mile race on Sunday in just 18 minutes and 49 seconds to claim the bronze medal.

The talented teen, who kept his cool even after crashing his £3,500 chair into a wall during the race, says the Olympic diving star came up to congratulate him afterwards.

His proud mum Kerry excitedly told the Tele: “Tom Daley came up and asked what Kyle’s name was.

“He was also really interested in finding out more about his chair.

“I think some of Kyle’s friends were quite jealous!” Kyle, who has been selected as one of the Commonwealth Games batonbearers, says it was the toughest race of his career to date.

The St Stephen’s High School pupil said: “It was tiring and I was glad to finish.

“Because the tyres on my chair are pumped up quite hard they bounce a lot so when my front wheel hit a raised drain under a tunnel, I crashed into a wall — but I just kept going.

“It was the hardest race I’ve done as it was mostly uphill but it was also really good as there were so many people there cheering me on.” Kerry, who lives with Kyle and his dad John Dooner in Moorfield Avenue, was bursting with pride as she stood in the crowd cheering him on.

She said: “He’s a phenomenal wee boy. The race organisers said there had never been a Scottish male in either the junior or senior race — he was the first. He’s amazing.

“He balances his school work with training and his downtime when he enjoys playing with the dog and chatting to his friends.

“He just gets on with it and faces his disability head on and never sees himself as being disabled.” Kyle was born with lumbosacral agenesis — a rare condition meaning his lumbar, sacrum and tail bone did not develop in his spine.

This year he is busier than ever and has two competitions next month — the Westminister Mile in London and the British Wheelchair Racing Association Championships in Stoke Mandeville stadium.

He will also compete in the Junior Great North run in Newcastle in September and the Great Scottish Run in October.

Kyle’s ambition is to compete at the Paralympics in Tokyo in 2020.
