A DAD was left speechless after meeting his world famous sporting hero — in the Port Tesco’s fruit and veg aisle.

David McDade popped into the supermarket on Thursday night to pick up some juice after a meal out with family, only to meet Scottish sporting icon Dario Franchitti.

The 33-year-old told the Tele that he ‘couldn’t believe his eyes’ when he spotted the four-time IndyCar champion – who was formerly married to Hollywood actress Ashley Judd – casually wandering around the store with a shopping basket.

David, who works as a mechanic, said: “Dario Franchitti is my hero, I’m a huge fan of his and I used to watch him race all the time on Sky Sports.

“But it’s somebody you don’t expect to meet in the Port Tesco!

“I went up to him when he was in the fruit and veg aisle and said ‘excuse me are you Dario Franchitti?’ and he said he was.

“I asked him what he was doing down here and he said he was going sailing so he was buying food for the trip.

“He was so friendly and said it was no bother at all when I asked him for a photo.

David, who lives in Arran Avenue with his wife Karen, 32, and daughters Poppy, eight, and five-year-old Isla, said he was so surprised to come face-to-face with his hero that he initially doubted it was him.

He said: “I was with my eldest girl and said to her, ‘I think he’s a really famous racing driver’ but she didn’t know who he was as she’s only eight.

“I desperately tried to find my wife and when I found her asked her to Google him on her phone to get a picture and double check. She said she wasn’t sure so I just decided to ask him.” It was recently reported that Dario has moved back to his £4 million mansion in Port of Menteith, near Stirling, from the US after being forced to retire from motor racing after a horror crash.

He suffered two broken vertebrae, a fractured ankle and concussion in a 200mph smash in Houston, Texas, in October last year.

Dario, who was married to ‘Kiss the Girls’ and ‘Double Jeopardy’ star Judd before they split last year, made a full recovery and is now believed to be working as an IndyCar consultant.

A thrilled David says he now has a treasured snap of him with his hero which he has saved as his screensaver on his mobile phone — as well as proudly posting it on social media site Twitter.

He added: “I’m just really happy to have met Dario. To bump into such a huge celebrity in my local supermarket was incredible.”
