A RISING Port Glasgow athlete has set his sights on Commonwealth Games glory after winning a string of national competitions.

Kyle Brotherton, 14, stormed to victory at the British Wheelchair Racing Association Championships in Coventry last month, winning the 100m, 200m and the 400m events.

The speedy teen also scooped three gold medals at the recent Forth Valley Flyers Championships at Grangemouth Stadium in Falkirk and also travelled to London to compete in the Bupa Westminster Mile, where he achieved fourth place.

Kyle also enjoyed competing at the world famous Stoke Mandeville stadium last month where he took home third place in the 100m.

Boosted by his recent medal haul, Kyle has now set his sights on competing at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast.

He told the Tele: “I’m really pleased about how I’m performing at the moment as I feel that I’m getting better and better.

“When I competed in Stoke Mandeville I was up against guys who were about seven years older than me so it was great to win those races.

“I would love to be at the next Commonwealth Games, that’s my big goal so I’ll keep working towards that.” His proud mum Kerry, of Moorfield Avenue, says all her son’s hard work is now paying off.

She said: “He’s exhausted as he’s been competing all over the place.

“I’m so proud of him as he’s been up against big strapping men, but that hasn’t put him off.” Kyle was also invited to try out the athletics track at Hampden Park before the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

He said: “It was a great track to race on and I managed to win the 200m race I was competing in.” The St Stephen’s High School pupil, who was born with lumbosacral agenesis — a rare condition meaning his lumbar, sacrum and tail bone did not develop in his spine, is gearing up to compete in the Junior Great North run in Newcastle in September and the Great Scottish Run in October.

As well as the Commonwealth Games, Kyle’s hoping to compete at the Paralympics in Tokyo in 2020.

The talented teen is also a member of the Port Glasgow Otters’ swim team and hopes to start competing at a national level from September.
