FANCY footwork was on display at Port Glasgow Town Hall as senior citizens enjoyed a nostalgic tea dance.

The toe-tapping event on Wednesday was a throwback to the days of the hugely popular dance halls which were once a cornerstone of the Inverclyde social calendar.

Throughout the afternoon, 190 glamorous guests enjoyed waltzing to music from Willie and Judy Young of Melody Mix.

They also mingled with each other over cups of tea, cakes and sandwiches.

Julie Gillan, a development worker at Your Voice, says the tea party was one of the best yet.

She told the Tele: “It’s the busiest tea dance we’ve had in ages.

“We even had people from Erskine Hospital who had travelled down for it.

“It was a great success and there was a brilliant atmosphere.” As well as dancing and refreshments, guests also had the chance to get free eye tests.

Julie added: “The community optician from the NHS came along so people could have free eye tests and people could also arrange for the optician to visit them in their home.

“So not only was it a fun and sociable event, they could also find out more about the different services available.” Julie was keen to thank Tony Buckley for the catering and Nell McFadden MBE, chairperson of Inverclyde Elderly Forum, who sadly was unable to attend the event due to ill health.

She said: “Cheers to Nell and we all wish her well.” The next tea dance is at Port Glasgow Town Hall on Wednesday 19 November from noon to 3pm.

Tickets are £2 and due to the popularity of the event, people are advised to buy them in advance from Your Voice in Clyde Square or by phoning them on 728628.
