A FOOTBALL fanatic from Port Glasgow is the talk of the town after he met legendary Roma star Francesco Totti — and spurred him on to net in a massive Champions League match.

St Michael’s Primary pupil Niall Jamieson, six, is the envy of his classmates after winning a competition to be a mascot as Manchester City took on the Italian giants last week.

Niall, whose dad is Greenock Juniors captain Tam Jamieson, was certain to be paired with a big-name player but scored a winner when he teamed up with Roma captain Totti to lead out the two teams in front of almost 40,000 supporters.

The Italian legend, who has scored over 230 goals in more than 560 appearances for his club, ended up netting the crucial equaliser which earned the Italian aces a 1-1 draw in the Champions League group stage match in Manchester.

But Niall’s dad Tam, 32, from Lomond Road in the Port, says the goal was no coincidence — because his son predicted the veteran midfielder would score.

He told the Tele: “When he came back to his seat in the stadium I asked if Totti said anything to him but he said he couldn’t really understand the Italian accent.

“But Totti did say to him ‘do you think I will score tonight?’ and Niall said ‘I hope so, I think you will’.

“He must have been a good luck charm.

“It all just happened on the night with Totti scoring and breaking the Champions League record for the oldest player to score in the competition.

“It’s a moment we will never forget.” Niall, who plays for Port Glasgow Juniors, was plucked from thousands of names in a Mastercard competition and given the VIP treatment with tickets for the match for him and his dad plus exclusive behind the scenes access to the managers and star-studded line-up of players.

While Tam was cheering on from the stand, he admits he was jealous at not being out on the park himself.

The former Port Juniors player said: “It was brilliant, something every kid wants to do — and I envy him as well!

“I follow a lot of football and have watched Totti play with Roma and watched him for Italy.

“He’s always been one of those players that oozes class.

“He was the best player on the park that night but Niall just kind of walked out as if it was an everyday thing.” “It was a great experience for him.”
