A DREADLOCKED Port thug smashed a man’s head into the ground during a sustained attack — then smirked as he was jailed for the beating.

Drunken William Anderson launched the unprovoked assault after being brought to court on another matter.

The 42-year-old grinned as Sheriff Derek Hamilton sentenced him to nine months imprisonment earlier this week.

Prosecutor Pamela Brady said: “He was seen punching, headbutting and striking the man’s head off the ground.

“He had turned to him and challenged him to fight for no apparent reason. The matter was reported to police by an unknown individual.” Greenock Sheriff Court, pictured, heard how Anderson, 42, carried out the assault in at South Woodside Road in Glasgow on 13 July.

Depute fiscal Mrs Brady said: “He began punching the man repeatedly on the head.

“He was no longer at the locus when police arrived and had returned to the home of the woman named in the domestic charge.

“The eye of the man he assaulted required medical attention.

“The accused was later arrested.” He said of the street assault: “All parties had far too much to drink. Mr Anderson suffers from alcohol difficulties.” Sheriff Hamilton said he had to jail Anderson.

He told him: “You may not have a big record but in a very short period of time you appear to have developed a knack for ignoring court orders.

“A custodial sentence is the only appropriate way of dealing with you.” Anderson, who lives with his mother at Glenside Avenue in Port Glasgow, admitted repeatedly punching a man, striking his head off the ground and headbutting him all to his injury whilst on bail.

He also pled guilty to a separate charge of breaching a condition of bail in Broomhill Lane, Glasgow.

Anderson grinned as he was led away in handcuffs to begin his sentence.
