A BROWNED off tanning shop worker told today how she voiced concerns about staff and customer safety — and was promptly sacked.

Siobhan Black, pictured, says she had to work alone at night with hundreds of pounds in the till and no secure door entry system to protect her.

The Port woman — who left a solid call centre job to join Indigo Sun seven weeks ago — also claims that a salon panic button wasn’t working.

Siobhan, 24 — who was head of the firm’s shop in Linwood — told the Telegraph: “Customers were asking me why there was no buzzer entry on the door — anyone could just walk in off the street.

“One older lady was not happy about it all and she was really quite concerned about the security for the place.

“I told my manager that there was cause for concern.

“A shop in Kilbarchan was held up at gunpoint by robbers recently, and I’m having to sit in this salon at night on my own with hundreds of pounds in takings.

“I was told that security doors are expensive and that something would have to actually happen before we got one.” Siobhan told how she also flagged up the company’s own safety policy which she says recommends that two staff members are in a salon together at night.

But she claims that this was simply dismissed by her boss.

Siobhan said: “A week before I was sacked my manager was telling me that she couldn’t be happier with me and that she was really pleased with the way I was working and learning.

“I left my old job in an instant because I thought I had a really good future career with Indigo Sun. It was a brand new shop and I was basically in charge.

“I still haven’t been given a reason why I was sacked. I’m from the Port, so of course the first thing I’m going to do is ask.

“I was told that there had been complaints about me from fellow workers over a period of weeks, but I went to these people and they didn’t have any problem with me at all.

“I was pleading for my job — my partner and me have got a mortgage and bills to pay.

“I’m devastated. I’m now left trying to apply for jobs just before Christmas and we don’t know how we’re even going to make ends meet next month, never mind anything else.

“I’ve sent 15 text messages asking why I’ve been sacked and I’ve just been blanked.” Siobhan added: “I worked for two years at Wilko and two years at Webhelp TSC. There’s no doubt in my mind that I’ve been sacked just because I mentioned the safety concerns that customers came to me with.

“I began to feel uneasy about working on my own at night too.

“But I’ve got no employment rights because I was only there for seven weeks.” The Telegraph contacted Siobhan’s former manager, Lisa Fraser, about her dismissal, who told us: “I have no comment to make.” Indigo Sun’s operations manager, Angela Auchterlonie, said: “No comment will be made in response to the allegations other than that the claims are unfounded and the appropriate court proceedings will be raised against Miss Black if her unfounded allegations are published.” Siobhan said: “I’m not telling any lies and I’ve got nothing to fear. What can they do to me now?” Kay Taylor, manager of Renfrewshire Citizens Advice Bureau, said: “Young people are finding it so hard to get work and it is so important that they are aware of their rights.” “Anyone has suffered problems such as this and needs help can get free, impartial and confidential advice from the CAB.”
