A VULNERABLE 94-year-old woman fears she will miss a Christmas dinner day out with her family because of a broken lift.

Elizabeth Tallo, known as Betty, has been stuck inside her home in Port Glasgow’s Rowan Court for days because the even floors lift within the building is out of order.

The great-great grandmother is worried it won’t be fixed in time for Christmas and fears that she will have to cancel her festive meal out.

She said: “I cannot get out just now.

“Other people can walk down a flight of stairs to the third floor but I cannot walk.

“I can’t manage the stairs.

“I never go out without my wheelchair.” The pensioner is looking forward to celebrating with her family, including her daughter and son-in-law, son and daughter-in-law who are coming up from England to spend Christmas with her.

She said: “My dinner’s all booked and paid for — I hope the lift is on again by Thursday.” The senior citizen, who is partially sighted, says she went out with her daughter on Friday 12 December and when they returned home they discovered the lift wasn’t working.

They had to rely on the kindness of strangers who carried the senior citizen in her wheelchair down a flight of stairs to her flat.

Her daughter Myra Morwood said: “There were two young men who kindly offered to take us up to the fifth floor and carried her down in her wheelchair to the fourth floor.

“I don’t know what we would have done if those two young lads hadn’t been there.” Mrs Morwood told the Telegraph that she tried to call four caretakers on three different numbers to report the problem but says she couldn’t get a reply.

Myra, 70, of Gourock said: “It’s annoying, irritating and it’s a worry as Christmas is getting closer.

”If it’s not fixed, I’ll go down the road and tell the restaurant to make us five takeaway dinners!” Housing association River Clyde Homes say they sent contractors to Rowan Court within hours of the matter being reported to them.

Their spokesman said: “The fault was reported on Tuesday 16 December at 9.30am and the contractor attended at 3pm on the same day.

“Unfortunately the contractor is awaiting delivery of a part to carry out the repair and is working hard to have the lift working again as soon as possible.

“Our extra care team has been in touch with Mrs Tallo to see if she needs any additional support at this time.” But Betty’s daughter says that the parts delay of several days is not acceptable and believes that RCH should take steps to address it.

Myra said: “They shouldn’t need to wait for parts.

“They should always have a stock of equipment.”
