WARM tributes were paid today to a former Port Glasgow councillor who died suddenly on Sunday.

Dan Morrison, 69, represented the town on Inverclyde District Council and then Inverclyde Council from 1984 to 2003.

Both he and his late wife, Margaret, were leading Labour councillors at the same time.

Dan held various posts, including convener of housing and customer service, convener of miscellaneous services, chair of the licensing and registration panel and vice-convener of social work and housing.

Margaret was Depute Provost and convener of leisure and recreation. She passed away six years ago.

Current Provost, Labour’s Robert Moran, and former Liberal Democrat Provost, Ciano Rebecchi, both spoke warmly today of Dan, who was a joiner to trade and became a supervisor in Renfrewshire Council’s housing department.

Provost Moran said: “Dan and Margaret were inseparable. They worked tirelessly for the people of Port Glasgow.

“I don’t think we will ever see a husband and wife team like that again in local politics.

“They were both individuals and worked their socks off for Port Glasgow.” Former Provost Rebecchi said: “Dan was a good councillor and a very genuine, well-liked person.

“We had some good discussions during council meetings and then had a cup of tea together afterwards. I got on well with both Dan and Margaret.” Current council leader, Labour’s Stephen McCabe, also praised the contribution Dan and Margaret made to local politics.

Councillor McCabe said: “I had a lot of time and respect for Dan and Margaret. “Both of them were involved in community councils before joining Inverclyde District Council.

“They took me under their wing when I was a young councillor, and I learned a lot from them.” The couple are survived by their sons, Danny and Robert.

The funeral will take place on Monday at 9am at Holy Family Church in Port Glasgow. This will be followed by another at Greenock Crematorium at 10am. All welcome to attend.
