Susan Hughes, pictured, says if the crash had happened only minutes earlier she would have been dead.

The 61-year-old, who doesn’t keep in good health, was stunned as the vehicle smashed into her house on Tuesday afternoon.

She said: “I was having a cup of tea and a sandwich in the living room.

“If it had happened five minutes before, I would have been dead.

“I could actually see it happening.

“At first I thought a wean had thrown a brick at the window.

“But then the radiator under the window fell off the wall and the whole kitchen collapsed.

“All the kitchen units and everything inside them were lying on the floor and a crack appeared in the wall between the living room and kitchen.” “I ran out of the house round the side and saw the car in the wall.

“I couldn’t breathe and I couldn’t walk.

“All my neighbours were out in the street and they helped me. I think I was just in complete shock.” Eyewitnesses say the BMW came down nearby Pentland Road and through the junction and crashed into a wall mounted external gas box attached to the bungalow in Slaemuir Gardens.

A neighbour called the police and emergency services.

Specialist Scottish Gas engineers also rushed to the scene and the surrounding area was taped off.

Susan said: “Ambulance, police and fire brigade all came.

“The firemen thought the gas was going to blow and the house was going to go up in flames.” The grandmother suffers from COPD, asthma and osteroporosis and had just managed to shake off a chest infection before the terrifying accident set her back again.

She is currently staying with her daughter as she tries to get over the ordeal.

Susan said: “I can’t stop shaking. I’ve been to the doctor to get valium to calm me down.

“I was trying to get on my feet for my other daughter Leanne coming to visit with my granddaughter from Austrailia.” Structural engineers have inspected the house, owned by Blackwood Housing, and deemed it unsafe.

The gable end will have to come down and major works will be required to the kitchen and living room, including the replacement of an internal wall.

Work to take the wall down will start next week and Susan will have to put her furniture into storage.

Susan said: “It doesn’t look bad from the outside but inside it’s a complete mess.

“I haven’t got a clue how long it will be but I’m terrified to go back.

“I don’t think I will be able to sit and look out that window again.” A man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is expected to appear at Greenock Sheriff Court at a later date.
