A PRETTY Port wrestler hopes to leave her opponents on the ropes this weekend during a major bout in France.

Sophie Rorrison, pictured, has been selected to represent Scotland in the Breton Backhold Wrestling Championships in Brittany.

The 12-year-old, who is tipped for future stardom by the Scotland squad, leaves tomorrow and will take part in the tournament on Saturday.

She said: “This is the first time I’ve been to France.

“I’m really excited and can’t wait to see what the experience will be like.

“I didn’t think I was good enough to go but I finally made it.” Sophie’s delighted family are thrilled by her success.

Mum Claire, 33, said: “She’s not told anyone about the championships but I’ve been telling everyone. I’m so proud of her.” Sophie lives with her mum and brother Lewis Bell, nine, who’s also a keen wrestler, in Cardross Avenue.

She has thrown herself into wrestling since she was only three years old and now all her hard work is paying off.

What even makes her success even more remarkable is the fact she has hypermobility joints and faces a daily battle to overcome the pain this causes.

It also means she is more prone to injury but this has simply made the brave schoolgirl even more determined.

She even suffered a dislocated arm while taking part in a tournament in Luss but put it back in place and carried on.

Sophie said: “I’m always sore whether I wrestle or not.” The youngster trains at Red Road Wrestling Club in Glasgow where she is coached by her uncle Gordon Mackie.

He said: “It’s the first time Sophie has competed at international level.

“These championships are a big deal — there are 16 countries competing.

“She’s been training with the Scottish squad as well and they think she’s got great potential.” The family want to thank Sophie’s sponsors, Alan Rorrison and Amazon.
