THE reopening of Greenock"s main Tesco has been thrown into chaos after workers failed to meet their deadline.
The store, in Dalrymple Street, had been due to open its doors to customers today after five months of refurbishment to the building and car park.
But bosses admitted at the weekend it wouldn"t be ready for its grand reopening.
It is now scheduled to open at 8am on Wednesday.
Tesco"s other store, in Inverkip Street, was due to close yesterday. It will now remain open until tomorrow.
External work is being blamed for the delay. Inverclyde Council"s building inspectors still have to give the go ahead, which Tesco officials said they hope to have after an inspection today.
Corporate affairs manager Nick Gellatly said: 'We"d like to apologise to customers who had planned to visit our new store on Monday and to re-assure them that the Dalrymple Street store will open at 8am on Wednesday.
'We wanted to be sure that everything was complete before the store opens and believe it"s the right decision to delay opening.
'We hope to limit the inconvenience to customers by keeping our store at Inverkip Street open on Monday and Tuesday.'
Tesco would not confirm if contractors faced penalties for the late opening of the store.
