A MAN was slashed across the face in a brutal attack in Greenock last night.
The 20-year-old was assaulted by a man wielding a bladed weapon at around 7.30pm.
An ambulance was called but he managed to make his own way to Inverclyde Royal Hospital.
He was later transferred to the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow, where he is awaiting surgery.
Detective Constable Stuart Young, of Greenock CID, said: "The man was attacked in Nairn Road, near the Banff Road end, and sustained a single laceration to his face from a bladed implement.
"There had been some sort of fight and the victim sustained a bad injury."
He confirmed police would be carrying out door-to-door inquiries and is appealing for anyone who was in the area at that time to come forward. DC Young said: "The assault happened quite early in the evening and there would have been people about."
Detectives are treating the incident as a serious assault and anyone with information should call Greenock police on 492500, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
In a separate incident, a 54-year-old woman is expected to appear at Greenock Sheriff Court today in connection with a serious assault on a 51-year-old man in Kenilworth Crescent, Greenock, at 3am on Monday.
Two men, aged 38 and 40, are also expected to appear facing charges relating to an unconnected incident where two men, aged 22 and 19, were allegedly attacked outside the Co-op in King Street, Greenock, in the early hours of Sunday.
