A CAR smashed into headstones in Gourock Cemetery at the weekend.
Police say four memorials were damaged in the crash at the graveyard in Larkfield Road.
The incident happened near the York Road entrance between 5 and 6.30pm on Saturday.
Inspector Charlie Paul, who is based at Gourock police station, said: "A man walking through the cemetery saw a light-blue Ford Focus within the grounds hitting four separate headstones and causing damage to them."
He said the head groundsman would be contacting relatives of the people whose headstones had been disturbed.
A spokesman for Inverclyde Council, which maintains the facility, said: "We have been in contact with the families concerned. As police are investigating, it would not be appropriate to comment any further."
This is the latest in a spate of incidents which have seen gravestones desecrated in Inverclyde.
As the Tele reported yesterday, joyriders raced through Port Glasgow Cemetery in an old Transit van on Saturday morning.
The vehicle was driven into headstones before the culprits set it alight and ran off.
And at Greenock Cemetery last week, a horde of beer kegs were found strewn across graves.
A total of 36 containers were found dumped near the Bow Road entrance, causing distress to bereaved families who were paying their respects to relatives.
Police have also received a report of a broken window at Greenock Crematorium at the weekend.
Inspector Paul said: "We are following a positive line of inquiry in connection with the Gourock incident."
Anyone with information should call Greenock police on 492500, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
