A KILMACOLM man presented the winning trophy at the Open Golf Championship.

Colin Brown is captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews this year, and he handed over the famous Claret Jug on Sunday to this year's winner, Louis Oosthuizen, of South Africa, in front of a global TV audience.

Mr Brown became Captain for 2009-10 after holding other positions in the R&A.

He said: "It was a wonderful week and a fantastic thing to be involved in.

"I did my best not to drop anything while the eyes of the world were on us during the presentations."

Mr Brown said he told the winner 'congratulations, very well played' and Oosthuizen replied: "Thank you very much."

Last Tuesday, Mr Brown hosted a dinner for past winners of the Championship.

He spoke at the dinner, where the reply was given by former Open winner Tom Watson.

Mr Brown joined the Royal and Ancient in 1994. He served on the finance committee from 2000 to 2005, was chairman of the membership committee and is a member of the general committee.

He is a past captain of Kilmacolm Golf Club and, in 2001, captained Prestwick Golf Club in its 150th anniversary year. He plays to a handicap of seven.

Educated at Glenalmond College, he is a chartered accountant and retired following a career in stockbroking and investment management.

Mr Brown is a former chairman of the Scottish Stock Exchange.

His wife, Patricia, is vice captain of Renfrewshire Ladies' County Golf Association.

They have three adult children, all of whom attended St Andrews University.

Mr Brown was recently one of the guests at an Inverclyde Council civic reception for Kilmacolm Golf Club, where he is a member.

Provost Michael McCormick gave the reception to mark the club's successes last year.

Past Kilmacolm Captain David Wilson, who is Depute Provost and a Kilmacolm councillor, said: "For a village club, our achievements are spectacular.

"And it's a real feather in our cap to have Colin presenting the winning trophy at the world's top golf tournament."

Kilmacolm Golf Club's achievements over the past year include providing three members of the six-man Renfrewshire team which won the national county championship.

Also, Andrew Farmer won the Scottish Mid-Amateur title for golfers over 25.

Megan Briggs was the Scottish ladies golf champion and represented the senior Scottish team, while her sister, Eilidh, was a national junior player.

Matthew Clark also represented Scotland last year.
