Western Wildcats 2-2 Greenock Ladies 2nd

THROUGH illness and injury, a depleted Gr-eenock Ladies 2nd 11 side faced a youthful Western Wildcats team at Clydebank on Saturday.

It's been a stop-start season for Greenock so far which has made it difficult for players to find their rhythm, however, despite these set-backs, Greenock started the game positively.

Western Wildcats were pretty much camped in their own half for the first 15 minutes or so, but Greenock's passing let them down, mainly due to a lack of composure which eventually gave Wildcats the upper hand.

Wildcats started to pass the ball around and created a few heart-stopping moments in front of the Greenock goal.

Carol Atkinson saved Greenock's bacon with a goal line clearance on one occasion but shortly after, Western scored from short range and soon followed by another which gave them a 2-0 lead.

To Greenock's credit though, heads did not go down.

A substitution made 10 minutes from half-time saw the return of a Greenock veteran player who, moments later, won a short corner.

Greenock striker Julia Baldwin struck the ball towards the goal and midfielder Laura Atkinson was perfectly placed to slot the ball home. The score was 2-1 at half time.

After another re-shuffle of players due to injury, Greenock started the second half in a determined mood. Within the first few minutes, Julia Baldwin's power strike struck the Wildcats goalpost.

In reply, Wildcats tried to penetrate the Greenock defence but defenders Hannah McKay and Brenda Connor were snapping at their heels and managed to clear the danger.

Fortunately though, Greenock gathered momentum once more.

Midfielders Laura Atkinson and Gillian Finch, worked tirelessly down the wings, defending and supporting the forwards.

Then 15 minutes into the second half, Julia made a penetrating run and slipped the ball to her strike partner who swept the ball into the goal to level the score at 2-2.

Despite a mini-fightback by the Wildcats team, neither team were able to take the upper hand so the game finished a 2-2 draw.

l Thanks to Neil McGarva for umpiring and to the travelling supporters. Also thanks to sponsors, Texas Instruments and 20/20 Renewables.

Congratulations to players of the match Hannah McKay and Julia Baldwin.
