College students set for charity walk
GENEROUS students at James Watt College are going the extra mile for an international aid charity on Monday.
They are urging fellow learners, staff and members of the public to join them in a 'Miles for Smiles' walk.
The students, studying NC Uniformed and Emergency Services, are organising the charity walk for the 500 miles organisation, which supports amputees and other disabled people in Malawi and Zambia in Africa.
The walk, which costs £1 to enter, will be marked out by stewards along Greenock waterfront on the flat.
Lorna Smith, lecturer at the college, said: "The class study a range of topics to help prepare them for work in the uniformed and emergency services.
"In October, they raised over £200 for Help for Heroes through holding book, games and cake stalls.
"This term, topics they are studying include health, safety, fitness and wellbeing and team-work.
"The class are aiming to show how easy it is to incorporate exercise into a lunch hour by holding this charity walk.
"By walking a mile you will be exercising without the need for specialist clothing or gym membership and you can bring friends, children and dogs.
"Health and wellbeing are not the only benefits however, and students are asking those who join us on the walk to donate £1 to the 500 miles charity.
"This is a great opportunity to do something that benefits yourself and others during your lunch break.
"You can enjoy some fresh air and help someone to walk again."
Anyone interested should register at the college Waterfront Campus between noon and 1pm.
