A MAJOR £15 million housing development in Gourock has been given the green light.

Members of Inverclyde Planning Board have this afternoon decided to approve an application which will see Merchant Homes build 38 flats on the site of the old Gantock Hotel.

The application includes four blocks ranging in height from three-storeys to five, plus car parking spaces and garages.

The plot has been vacant since the Ramada Jarvis hotel, pictured, which latterly occupied the site, burnt down in February 2008.

Planners say that the development will regenerate 'a crucial site at the western gateway to Gourock'.

In January, the Tele exclusively revealed how a developer had swooped to buy the Cloch Road site.
