The Family Nurse Partnership aims to support first-time mums who are aged 19 or under, and it aims to develop their parenting skills.

The intensive programme also supports mothers by helping to ensure the future health and wellbeing of their child and themselves, as well as reducing the number of subsequent teenage pregnancies.

Parents are also encouraged to plan financially for the future through education and employment.

A spokeswoman for NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde health board said: “This is an intensive and structured programme which is delivered by specially-trained nurses to first-time teenage pregnant women and the nurses support them throughout their antenatal period until the child’s second birthday.

“The programme is being rolled out across Greater Glasgow and Clyde and plans are already at an advanced stage for the Inverclyde area. The programme is expected to be operational in Inverclyde by late spring 2014.”
