Ton boss was stabbed as a kid
A MORTON boss who was stabbed is backing the Tele's sticker scheme.
Allan McManus, assistant manager with the club, says he was lucky to escape serious injury and that knife-carrying has to be stopped.
He said: "I've seen it up close and personal where I was brought up in Renfrew and in Paisley.
"As a young boy I was stabbed with a screwdriver - I was stabbed in the back round about my kidneys and I was very fortunate I wasn't badly injured. It can happen to anybody from any walk of life and it's not acceptable to carry knives or use them."
Allan, 35, is throwing his weight behind the Stop Knives Save Lives campaign because he says footballers have a responsibility to set an example to young people.
He said: "Football is in the public eye and whether players like it or not we have got a responsibility to set the right standards and be role models in the community.
"Knife crime is a big problem in society and it's got to be something that is not tolerated. Someone can lose their life and the person using it also loses their life because they are in jail. There are no winners."
The 'Stop Knives Save Lives' stickers are sponsored by local firms Crawfurd Car Centre, Golden Casket and Wilson's Coaches and feature the anonymous Crimestoppers hotline to encourage the public to report knife-carriers to the authorities to save lives.
Our stickers also come on the back of brave dad John Muir's fight to get justice for the tragic death of his son Damian, to give those who carry knives a mandatory jail sentence.
You can pick up a sticker to show your support, at any of the following places: Greenock Telegraph reception, Tesco Filling Station, Container Way, Greenock; Morrisons Filling Station, Rue End Street, Greenock; BP Filling Station, Regent Street, Greenock; BP Filling Station, Branchton; Clydeport Filling Station, Greenock Road, Port Glasgow, and Pearson's Filling Station, Shore Road, Wemyss Bay.
