A TEENAGE thug entered a Rutherglen convenience store, took a glass bottle of Irn Bru out the fridge and whacked it over another man’s head.

The assault landed James Gordon Smith, 19, of Loch Assynt, East Kilbride, in the dock at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

He admitted he attacked his victim at the Londis on Drumilaw Road on October 4 by hitting him on the head and body with the glass bottle.

This caused his victim to fall to the ground where Smith repeatedly punched him on the head and body to his injury.

His victim was left with a cut to the mouth and grazing on his face.

Smith also shouted, swore and acted in an agressive manner on route to Cathcart Police Station.

He was remanded in custody for 47 days for the offence.

Sentencing Sheriff Raymond A McMenamin said: “It’s hardly surprising that you have spent time in custody for this type of offence. It is the sort of thing that will automatically let the court send you to jail.”

He placed Smith under supervision for 12 months because of the nature of the offence and his criminal record.

He also told Smith that he must complete 160 hours of unpaid work in the community which was reduced from 200 hours because of his early plea.

Smith must complete this work within six months as an alternative to custody.
