Shoppers across the country all but had a breakdown this week when Aldi launched a brand new range of scented candles to rival Jo Malone’s at a fraction of the cost.

Why did they get themselves in a fluster? Because at just £3.99 - compared to Jo Malone ones at £44 - they sold out minutes after hitting the shelves.

Brits across the nation took to Twitter to vent their fury at missing out on the bargain of the year so far as shoppers snapped them up by the dozen and reportedly sold them on eBay for up to SEVEN times their in-store price.

Glasgow Times:

However, there is now light at the end of the tunnel for candle enthusiasts - Aldi has confirmed a fresh supply will be made available online next week.

“In light of the overwhelming demand we have experienced, we are pleased to confirm our luxury candle range will be available to purchase online at aldi.co.uk from Tuesday, March 21,” said Tony Baines, joint managing director of corporate buying at Aldi.

The premium candles - available in ‘No 1’ lime, basil, and mandarin, ‘No 2’ freesia and pear, or ‘No 3’ pomegranate noir - are said to smell identical to Jo Malone’s and, with a burn time of 48 hours, further rival Jo Malone’s which burn for 45 hours.

Above all, though, it’s the astonishing 90 per saving that has drawn early-morning shoppers out.

“The luxury candle range has been one of our most successful Specialbuys, and we’re delighted to ensure as many of our customers as possible can enjoy the stunning range that equal the quality, strength, and performance of high-end alternatives,” Mr Baines added.

Evening Times readers were quick to get in touch with their own battle tales on the candles’ launch day to highlight the chaos that ensued at Aldi stores across Glasgow.

Laura Jane Thomson from Blantyre told us on Facebook: “I saw a woman buy 15. I was in at 7.59am, a minute before it officially opened and customers had baskets full and didn’t get any. Sold out at 8.01am.

“Guy at the till said to the woman they were allowed six each and she just said, as she was with her husband, she was allowed double and then proceeded to pay three transactions to allow through. Shocking behaviour and pure greed.”

Pam Gibson from Glasgow added: “Wasn’t such a great bargain watching women and men fight over them in Aldi Robroyston.

“I’m sure the person recording it will post it soon - shocking behaviour from adults.”
