Landmark buildings in Glasgow have lit up with a powerful message on St Andrew’s Day, urging Scots to commit to an act of kindness just like the patron saint himself.

A short film has been projected onto the Gilbert Scott Building at Glasgow University and the Riverside Museum, showing a series of messages inspiring Scots to #BeLikeStAndrew, concluding with the iconic St Andrew’s Cross.

Additional venues across Scotland have also been illuminated as part of the campaign, including Inverness Castle and Eden Court Theatre in Inverness, The Town House in Aberdeen, McManus Galleries, and Abertay University Library.

On Thursday night, Edinburgh Castle and other buildings in the capital will be lit up with the projection message which has been seen across Scottish cities.

The #BeLikeStAndrew campaign marks the start of Scotland’s Winter Festivals which opens with St Andrew’s Day, followed by Hogmanay, and then Burns Night.

Nicola Sturgeon has also called on Scots to mark St Andrew’s Day by performing an act of kindness.

The First Minister said that given the patron saint’s “values of compassion and solidarity” this was a way to celebrate Scotland’s national day.

She stated: “It’s a great way of marking this special day - and of making life a little bit brighter for our friends and neighbours.”

Speaking at the launch of the initiative in Edinburgh earlier this month, Minister for International Development and Europe Dr Alasdair Allan said: “Our patron saint, St Andrew, was known for being strong, sociable and fair, encouraging people to share what they had with those in need.

“Celebrating St Andrew’s Day presents a powerful opportunity for people across Scotland to keep the spirit of St Andrew alive, by coming together and helping others within their community.”
