THIS bonnie braveheart is high-kicking her way to the top after clinching a treasure trove of dancing trophies.

Isla McGregor is only 10 but has picked up more than 40 awards since she started competing in Highland competitions.

Twinkle toes Isla is a student at Jackson Dance Academy in Greenock and her coach says she’s destined for big things.

Teacher Linda Jackson said: “Isla is a fantastic student.

“Once she completes her intermediate section she will be going on to the premier league with the big guns in the championships.

“She’s definitely got what it takes and if she she continues to work as hard as she does she can go all the way.

“She even helps me with the wee ones, she’s a wee smasher.”

Isla lives in Inverkip with parents Heather MacLaurin and dad Graeme McGregor and big brother Robbie, 14.

She said: “It’s exciting taking part in competitions but sometimes when I look at the other dancers I feel a bit nervous.

“But you just forget about everything when I start dancing.”

Graeme, 41, said: “I’m extremely proud of all of her achievements. I still get a wee tear in my eye when I see her dance.”

The delighted dad formerly played the trumpet and studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Drama and Music.

He quipped: “I think Isla takes her rhythm from me.”

Isla attends classes twice a week with Linda and takes part in competitions twice a month.

Heather, 43, said: “She used to be a quite a shy wee girl but now she’s so much more confident.

“She loves her dancing, Linda and the way she teaches.”

Isla’s grandmother Tina MacLaurin was an accomplished dancer herself and performed on the popular BBC Scotland White Heather Club variety show which ran from the late 1950s until the late 1960s.

Heather said: “Isla’s granny is thrilled that Isla is following in her footsteps and recently went to the Isle of Harris where she competed in the Mod and was runner-up.”
