TELE readers are today given a glimpse of a beautiful statue which will take pride of place at a newly refurbished railway station.

The resin model of a happy schoolboy heading for a holiday ‘Doon the Watter’ will be cast in bronze before being unveiled at the £4m revamped railway station in Wemyss Bay, pictured,  in spring next year.

Friends of Wemyss Bay Station commissioned the new piece by Angela Hunter, pictured, the sculptor behind the popular Girl on a Suitcase statue in Gourock.

Angela said: “I have loved doing it.

“The 1950s is the era of my childhood, when families went ‘doon the watter’ for holidays.

“Just like ‘Wee Annie’ in Gourock, he’s wearing the attire of my childhood with his ‘snake belt’ and Clarks sandals.

“I am honoured that the Friends of Wemyss have asked me to do this.

“I am very proud to be asked to have my work in such a wonderful station – it really is a spectacular place.

“The Friends of Wemyss Bay Station do a really great job.”

Artist Angela, from Innerleithen, says the statue has not got a name yet.

She added: “When I did the statue of Wee Annie, it was the local primary school who chose her name.

“So I’ll leave it up to the local community to choose a name for him.”

This will be Angela’s third art project in Inverclyde, after Wee Annie and her Bank Street memorial to the eight local people who were killed in Greenock during the Radical War almost 200 years ago.

Angela is keen to thank Nancy Cameron and Gregory Beecroft from the Friends of Wemyss Bay Station for their support throughout the project.
