A YOUNG school pupil met acclaimed artist and playwright John Byrne after impressing with his colourful drawing.

Michael Harkins, whose family are from Inverclyde, was a runner-up in the annual John Byrne National Drawing Competition and met the man himself as he was presented with a specially-designed certificate for his efforts.

The eight-year-old, who is in P4 at Langbank Primary, was selected from thousands of arty youngsters across the country.

Proud grandad Jim Lyons, from Gourock, said: “It was a school thing and was open to eight to 15-year-olds.

“But considering he’s only eight and the winner was 14, for a boy his age he’s done well.

“It’s great to see children doing things like this. I’m always proud of him.”

The competition is run in partnership with Education Scotland and is open to pupils from P4 through to third year in secondary school.

Artist John said: “I’m encouraged by the standard of all the artwork submitted in this year’s competition and I hope pupils across Scotland will continue to show us their artistic skills and love for drawing.”

As well as being a dab hand at art, Michael is also a keen footballer and plays for Port Glasgow Boys’ Club and recently starred in the Wizard of Oz at the Beacon Arts Centre.

His mum Paula is originally from Gourock.

She now lives in Langbank along with Michael, sister Grace, four, and brother Leo, one.
