SUPERHEROES are set to save the day at a fundraising football event in Inverkip.

Batman and Superman are some of the characters who will kick off a fundraising five-a-side football event at the village’s community hub next month.

Money raised from the charity day on December 27 will be used to support the hub and create a youth service for children aged between 12 and 15.

Andrew Mitchell, who is a volunteer at the centre, came up with the idea for the football match after taking part in a similar event.

The 29-year-old engineer told the Tele: “The hub has been great for the area and I want it looked after and well supported for years to come.

“I’ve created a ‘superhero 5-a-side fundraiser’ which I hope will become an annual event between Christmas and New Year, to raise funds for the hub itself.

“I was involved in a similar event when based in Largs and that raised lots of money for local charities for many years.”

Centre manager Kevin Rodgers said the football match will build on the success of the hub which opened in January.

He said: “The first year has been absolutely brilliant.

“We are really pleased with the way things have taken off. It has exceeded our expectations and the board of trustees and the volunteers have been brilliant.

“One thing we have not got is a youth service for children in the 12 to 15 age group and now we’re established, we’re going to work to try and raise the funds to start one, hopefully getting underway in February or March.”

Kevin said that Sainsbury’s in Inverkip has also lent its support.

He added: “The firm chose us as their nominated charity last year and they will match fund what is raised at the Superhero day.”

Everyone is invited to come along to the event, which kicks off at 3pm. Entry is £30 per team and players must be 18 and over.

A raffle will also be held and Kevin and Andrew are appealing for donations from local businesses.
