A DETERMINED mum is going the extra mile to help a brave little boy who suffers from a rare neurological disorder.

Four-year-old Adam Rafferty, from Wemyss Bay, is unable to speak and suffers from epilepsy because of Sturge-Weber syndrome and athetoid cerebral palsy.

Family friend Sharon Black says courageous Adam has inspired her to take on the 23-mile Kiltwalk from Glasgow to Balloch.

Sharon, 52, hopes to raise as much money as she can to help Adam's parents Wendy and Andrew purchase a specialist bike which can cost up to £4,000.

She told the Tele: "I am taking part in the Kiltwalk in aid of wee Adam, who is our good family friend.

"Adam is is unable to walk or talk and requires a wheelchair to get around.

"I am hoping to raise funds to help provide Adam with a specialised bike and equipment to help get him out more."

Sharon, who lives next door to Adam's gran Susan Harkins in Wemyss Bay's Leven Road, said she feels ready for the challenge.

She already walks 15 miles a day through her own pet service business 'Maws and Paws'.

She said: "I also run 10ks and 5ks, go to the Greenock Parkrun every week and the Waterfront running group on a Monday.

"They've all been so supportive."

Adam's mum Wendy says she can't thank Sharon enough for what she's doing for her courageous son.

She said: "I can't believe Sharon is going to walk 23 miles, it's amazing.

"It means so much to us as the money raised will go towards a bike that will allow Adam to get out more, so he's not sitting in his wheelchair.

"Adam loves being outdoors so this special bike, which we can ride with him, will make a huge difference and make it easier for me to get out with him.

"The bike also turns into a buggy, which is really helpful."

Wendy will bring Adam along to support Sharon at the event on Sunday April 29.

She said: "I'm go to bring Adam to cheer Sharon on at all the pit stops."
