INJURY: Man was taken to IRH.

ARMED robbers attacked a pensioner in his own home and made off with more than £1,000.

Three men forced their way into his house in Kilmacolm on Monday night.

They assaulted him, demanded money, and made off with a four-figure sum of cash.

The 70-year-old, who was injured and badly-shaken, alerted his neighbour, who called police. The man was taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital but was released after treatment.

Detective Inspector John Dearie, of Greenock police, said: "It's an extremely unusual event for someone to be attacked in his own home.

"It is a shocking crime and the victim is obviously badly shaken and upset.

"It was a cowardly attack and we are trying to establish why this man was targeted."

The robbery happened in Overton Terrace, West Glen Road, near the High Street, around 8pm. It is believed a weapon was used.

DI Dearie said: "They may have driven to his house or walked there. They could have travelled to the area or may have been seen hanging around the village prior to the robbery.

"They could have come from the public house or shops.

"The flat is right across from a swing park and there may have been people walking their dogs. There would have been passing motorists, who may have seen someone acting suspiciously.

"I would appeal to anyone who may have been in the area at the time to get in touch."

Police officers are carrying out a forensic examination and door-to-door inquiries and are also studying private and commercial CCTV footage to trace the men responsible.

One of the men is described as 5ft 10in tall with blonde hair. He was wearing a beige jacket, jeans and brown casual clothing.

Anyone with information should call Greenock police on 492500 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
