Moves to help armed forces
INVERCLYDE Council is to develop an Armed Forces Community Covenant to make it easier for service personnel, families and veterans to access help and support.
The idea was suggested made by Inverclyde's Veterans' Champion Councillor Gerry Dorrian, and has enthusiastically been supported by the local authority.
The community covenant will be a voluntary statement of mutual support between the civilian community of Inverclyde and its local armed forces community.
It is designed to complement the Armed Forces Covenant - the moral obligation between the nation, government and armed forces.
Councillor Dorrian said: "Many local people are already involved in supporting the service community and have boosted the morale of our armed forces community through fundraising and taking part in military events and celebrations.
"The community covenant scheme aims to build on this local level of support and to promote understanding and awareness among the public of the issues affected the armed forces community."

Report commentGood to see a program to support some upright members of our community. Makes a change from the usual, ie throwing money at schemes to help the dregs of our society.

Report commentWhen can we expect to see a "homecoming parade" in Inverclyde then?
That is something, despite the areas historical links to Argylls etc, which seems strangely amiss, if Paisley and elsewhere can manage it, why can't Inverclyde?

Report commentSam, I have the answer.
Its simple - people like the Provost and McCabe. I was at a thing in the town hall and the so called Provost refused to sing the national anthem. FACT - and hundreds witnessed it.
He is a member of the Labour Party. They are a UNIONIST party. By accepting the union you accept the Head of State - the Queen.

Report commentGregor - without getting to far off topic - you can be a unionist and a republican too, they are not mutually exclusive.

Report commentInverclyde Council along with other Council's within the the Regiment's recruiting areas were all contacted, ie Inverclyde, West Renfrewshire, West Dumbartonshire, Strlingshire and Clackmananshire with reference to Home Coming Parades.
The Regiment marched through all council areas apart from Inverclyde, tell's a story in itself and if people want a reply as to why they didnt march through Inverclyde then they should write to the telegraph for an answer.

Report commentSounds good on paper, wait till we see how it is in practice, once implemented it will be interesting to see if the undertaker will learn respect for our armed forces as well as the vets.
During Armed Forces day this year the bold undertaker with millipedes and the BBC in tow, sauntered into Mearns Street and tried to turn the event into a political rally, despite objections from those present, they went out of their way to demeen the meaning of the event.

Report commentThe Undertaker and his party couldn't give a monkey's for the armed forces and they were only too happy to throw them to the slaughter on any Blair whim. Like Jock, I'll wait to see how this pans out but if it works, I'll be there to cheer them on!

Report commentThe undertaker should be ashamed of himself by steadfastly refusing to sing the National Anthem, my message to him would be that you represent a wide cross section of the community, and therefore do not pander to those who you assume to be your supporters, but remember those who actually vote and therefore put you on office.

Report commentGod Save the Queen is a dirge - I wouldn't sing it if you paid me.
On the other hand, mckenzie had to take the oath to the queen on taking his seat, so he's lied about that then too

Report commentThe Provost I was speaking of was McCormick. And I was at BB presentation at the Town Hall. I was embarassed for him. He looked like a spare **** at a wedding. When I seen him I decided to sing my wee heart out and stare at him whilst I done it. I was sitting on the front row. At the end of the National Anthem his face was bright red (probably with all the free drink he has consumed).
But yes the Labour Party is indeed a unionist party. And by definintion they accept the Queen - Our Queen - as the Head of State. God bless Lizzy and the House of Windsor!!!! I would like to thank the Labour Party and local councillors for supporting the aforesaid by virtue of them being members of a unionist party. Well done!!!!

Report commentNow that our Thin Red Line has been reduced to a number soon to be forgotten and that there are some new streets in the "Port" could we please have an Argyll Way and a Sutherland Drive as way of remembering them , as for the Dirge mentioned above why sing about your own demise in such a manner .

Report commentGregor - you can be a unionist and a republican - the union is a political entity - union of parliaments (1707) - nothing to do with monarchs
