THIEVES caused travel chaos for train passengers this morning after they stole cable on the railway line near Whinhill.

The vandalism to the line took place in the early hours of this morning and had serious knock-on consequences for commuters.

It meant that trains on the Glasgow-Wemyss Bay line could only start and stop from Port Glasgow.

ScotRail advised Glasgow-bound passengers from Wemyss Bay to speak to station staff for taxi transport to be arranged to Gourock and a connecting train service.

Customers travelling from Glasgow Central towards Wemyss Bay were advised to remain on the train to Gourock if services were diverted, and then speak to a member of staff there to arrange for taxi transport to Wemyss Bay.

Passengers travelling down to Whinhill, Drumfrochar, Branchton, IBM or Inverkip stations were asked to alight at Port Glasgow for a replacement bus service.

Customers travelling from these stations towards Glasgow were also advised to travel on the replacement road transport to the Port for a train from there.

A spokesman for the British Transport Police said: "We received a report at 4.30am this morning of a cable theft in the vicinity of Whinhill Station.

"Inquiries are ongoing."
