PENSIONERS partied at a wartime event at the Chartroom in Inverkip.

More than 100 guests attended the bash held to mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings and the centenary of the First World War.

Residents from care homes across Inverclyde enjoyed a lunch and live entertainment from the WOOPI singers, surrounded by wartime decorations and memorabilia.

Some dressed up as land girls while others were decked out in pinnies.

Jaswinder Kaur, activities co-ordinator at Bellaire House in Greenock, organised the event and got in the spirit of the occasion by singing ‘The White Cliffs of Dover’, backed by fellow co-ordinators.

She said: “Everyone just joined in with the singing. It was really good but it was a bit nerve-wracking for me!

“Hopefully everyone had a good time.” The celebrations reached out to all ages and children from local primary schools also took part.

Jaswinder said: “It was a general wartime theme, with people coming from different generations with different experiences of that era.” A Halloween event has now been arranged at the same venue for 30 October.

Jaswinder added: “The day was such a huge success and we are still receiving positive feedback. More people now want to get involved in the event in October.”
