INCREDIBLE Inverkip Primary pupils are on a fantastic run — after notching up their eighth athletics title in a row.

The school’s P5-7 pupils were among five teams competing at the annual Inverclyde Sportshall Athletics finals in Greenock Sports Centre recently.

More than 500 sporty youngsters from 19 primaries took part in preliminary leagues, which started around the end of October.

The top team in each of the four leagues secured a place in the big finale at Greenock Sports Centre along with the best-placed runner-up.

This year’s finalists were Newark and St John’s in Port Glasgow, joined by Gourock, Wemyss Bay and Inverkip primaries — and the Tele was there to capture the action.

Event organiser Stewart Burns, from Inverclyde Leisure, said it was another runaway success with Inverkip the victors on the day.

He told the Tele: “Inverkip won it again and I think it’s their eighth in a row.

“The event continues to be an important date on the school calendar encompassing fun and enjoyment in an overwhelming sporting environment, competing in good spirit and fair play.

“This year’s event was a great success with each school bringing a great support, from parents to grandparents, cheering on from the sidelines, providing a great atmosphere and generating great enthusiasm from the children which was second to none.

“The final event is made up of various adapted athletic activities from javelin, long jump, triple jump, vertical jump, and speed bounce to relay races.

“This year the final was exhilarating as ever as the kids showcased their talents. The competition was eagerly contested throughout and went right down to the wire to conclude who would be crowned this year’s winner — with Inverkip eventually securing their name on the winners’ shield.

“Inverclyde Leisure would like to pass on thanks to all the schools and all the supporters who came along on the day and made it a very special atmosphere and one to remember. We look forward to welcoming you back next year.” As winners, Inverkip Primary pupils were in action earlier this week in Clydebank at the West of Scotland Sportshall finals.
