A YOUNG man has died following a road crash in Greenock at the weekend.

The 24-year-old, named locally as Reagan McArthur from Skelmorlie, passed away in hospital following a collision on the A78 Inverkip Road on Saturday just after 8pm.

Police say he was driving a Ford Focus in the southbound lane, near to Bankfoot Roundabout, when it appears that the vehicle lost control and struck a crash barrier.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and the road was closed to allow crash experts to carry out an investigation.

Mr McArthur was taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital where he was treated in intensive care.

Police said today that he had tragically died from his injuries during the course of yesterday.

Sergeant Kenny Malaney, of Renfrewshire and Inverclyde’s divisional road policing unit, is leading the investigation into the accident.

He has issued an appeal for any witnesses to the crash, or anyone with information that may assist his enquiry into the cause of the accident.

People are asked to contact Police Scotland on the non-emergency 101.
