INVERCLYDE has no shortage of film fans, so there should be a sound response to a charity concert being held on Saturday.

The Co-operative Funeralcare Band is performing a Night at the Movies at St John’s Episcopal Church, Greenock, featuring a splendid selection of cinematic specials.

Founded in 1918 as the CWS Glasgow Band, the Co-op is Scotland’s most successful contesting brass band of all time, having won the Scottish Championships more than any other outfit.

So they are well placed to do justice to classics like ‘Star Wars’, ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Born on the Fourth of July’, all of which were penned by the brilliant John ‘Jaws’ Williams.

British Red Cross will benefit from an evening’s entertainment demonstrating how crucially important music is to the movies.

At least two James Bond themes will shake and stir the audience: Paul McCartney’s ‘Live and Let Die’ and ‘Skyfall’, written by Adele and producer Paul Epworth.

The undisputed king of Bond themes, however, was the late John Barry, who composed the music for many of them, including ‘Goldfinger’ and ‘The Living Daylights’, as well as other movies such as ‘The Ipcress File’, ‘Midnight Cowboy’ and ‘Dances with Wolves’.

Another film theme on offer this weekend will be ‘Toy Story’, where Randy Newman captured perfectly the quirky nature of a timeless classic.

Anything you donate will be appreciated by a charity which assists vulnerable people at home and abroad.

Your help will be music to their ears!
